Our identity, our spirituality and mission are rooted in Jesus and modeled on the life and example of Daniel Comboni and our foremothers.
Who is Daniel Comboni? He was born on March 15,1831 in a small town on Lake Garda in the northern part of Italy. During his teens years Daniel heard about the Japanese martyrs and wanted to be a martyr like them. Later on Daniel met with a priest who had returned from Africa and the testimony of that priest convinced Daniel that he was called to be a missioner in Africa. In 1864 something happened that changed his life forever. God spoke to him. In prayer Comboni envisioned how to be a missioner of God with the Africans. He crafted the "Plan for the Regeneration of Africa" which called for "Saving Africa with Africa", which is the empowerment of the Africans to be the protagonists of their own human and spiritual promotion; involving all people in the implementation of his vision and plan, (i.e. inclusive establishing missionary institutes of sisters www.comboniane.org. brothers and priests www.comboni.org, www.combonimissionaries.org, and lay missioners: www.laymission-comboni.org).
Daniel Comboni died in Kartoum, Sudan on October 10, 1881. Proclaimed Saint in 2003. These are just few historical notes on St. Daniel Comboni To know more about him and his whole life contact us and visit the "WRITINGS" of Daniel Comboni at www.comboni.org.
The first five Comboni sisters joined Daniel in 1877 and were missioned to Sudan. Like him, they dared become women of vision, women of hope, women of the Gospel for their times as we strive to be today.
